They area actually the first production run of .458 SOCOM cases. Robert Hayden would not neck them down.....I had to buy them all straight walled and run them through a sizer die.
Back in 2001, Robert agreed to run off a 2,000 piece batch of .458 SOCOM BASIC brass. It was run off the 50AE line (headstamped as such), but not trimmed down to 50AE length. They were left at 1.575" long. He then cut the rim/head on the 44 AMP line to get the rebated rim.
I then went back to him about six months later to get more and he was less than freindly about it. He said I had to take at least 10,000 cases or forget it. I had to pre-pay up front before he would start. Then he over ran the batch to 11,500 and I had to cough up more cash. They were fifty cents each. It took me several years to sell them all.

I see they are still making the 458 Brass, down to 0.33 each in quantity. I guess we shouldn't temp fate. Probably best to wait until we get our 44 AMP brass first. |

I got my new issue of "Handloader" and Grandpa Hayden is showing a nice young person how to handload. Business is another story.

2 months ago I ordered 1000 pcs of 445 supermag brass from starline. They told me when I called them that as a rule they don't put a caliber that was sold out in production again until they have prepaid orders totalling 30,000 pcs. I was told that I could be waiting as long as to end of the year before I see my brass, or maybe longer. When you go to their website they are out of the majority of their calibers which makes me wonder how they stay in business like that. But I guess when you are the only show in town it comes with benefits.
I'm new here by the way, and I've taken up interest in the Automag after I heard that they would be produced here in Maryland about an hours drive from me. Before I commit to one of those new Kodiaks I want to find out what I'm actually buying. I had a terrible experience with a Wildey pistol to the point where I thought that I would never try another big caliber auto pistol again. So I'm here to educate myself before I take the plunge. I'm more of a TC contender guy now who is attempting to try something new an interesting.
If I can take an automag to the range without a tool box and actually have fun without field stripping it every 20 rounds I might buy one. I couldn't do that with a wildey but it did turn me into an amature gunsmith, lol.

I haven't heard anything on the 445 supermag brass. I know that it's out nationwide so it can't be too much longer before they get enough orders to start production. As far as the 44 amp goes, I just reserved a new 44 Automag Kodiak pistol from the Auto Mag Company here in Rockville Maryland. I was going to order some 44 amp brass from Starline but I recieved a letter from the Auto Mag Company stating that my pistol reservation is dependent on whether the gun is approved by Maryland's Handgun Roster Board which won't happen until the end of the year. I can't place any pre orders with Starline because of that. I am going to contact the Automag Company and get their response to the current brass situation. You would think that they would meet starline's pre order minimum before the reintroduction of the Automag begins in the spring of 2011. Afterall, reintroducing this gun to the market place at $2800 each is bad enough in this economy but doing so without any loaded ammo or brass being available is suicide. I'm sure they've taken this strongly into consideration, and I'll post something when I hear back from them.

I checked my order with Midway and they put it off to the end of July. I placed the order 11/09. Glad I have some on hand.
